Longos: Daphnis and Chloe

This depiction of two children of nature awakening to first love is one of the few surviving ancient novels. Daphnis and Chloe, written in Greece around 200, might well be the first entertainment novel ever. It has been published in many different translations since the 16th century and the story is also known as an operetta and a ballet.

William Shakespeare: Love’s Labour Lost

The Bard’s early comedy tells a story of the young king from Navarre and his courtiers, who make a vow to focus on duties and refrain from romance for three years. The attempt becomes of course complicated right from the start, when the neighbouring princess shows up with her lovely entourage. Each book tells the story of one lonely and hurt individual finding love. Mary Balogh is hailed as a legend in the historical romance genre. Her strength is in creating complex characters and describing their inner turmoil. The best part is, that even when they are scarred from past experiences, they are eventually healed by the power of love.

Holden Sheppard: Invisible Boys

A raw and touching YA novel about three young gay men in rural Australia. Struggling to come to terms with their queer identity in a small town where such things are not even acknowledged, the boys face judgment and even violence. Due to the themes this is not an emotionally easy book, but eventually there is always hope and even the promise of love.

Kahden luonnonlapsen herääminen ensirakkauteen on yksi harvoista säilyneistä antiikin romaaneista. Kreikassa noin vuonna 200 kirjoitettu Dafniksen ja Khloen tarina on varmaankin maailman ensimmäisiä viihderomaaneja. L.M. Montgomery tunnetaan herttaisista tyttökirjoistaan, mutta hänen kynästään on lähtöisin myös yksi kaikkien aikojen ihanimmista rakkausromaaneista. Alun perin vuonna 1926 julkaistun tarinan sankaritar on sukulaisten nitistämä vanhapiika Valancy, joka epäilyttävän eksentrisenä pidetyn Barneyn rohkaisemana uskaltaa vihdoin syleillä elämää ja antautua rakkaudelle.
