New Active Learning Centre (AKKU) opened
In August 2015, Espoo City Library opened the Active Learning Centre (AKKU) in Opinmäki, Suurpelto. AKKU’s operations are based on the Paja concept, which won an award in the Mayor’s innovation competition.
AKKU emphasises lifelong learning by doing. Its activities are planned and implemented together with the Youth Services and Opinmäki’s other operators. AKKU aims to meet the needs of the pupils of Opinmäki’s schools and the local residents.
AKKU has a compact collection. It includes bestsellers, magazines and picture books. Books reserved from other libraries through the HelMet system are easy to pick up from AKKU. AKKU offers a wide variety of events for everyone. The library is equipped with the latest technology, including 3D printers, a smart sewing machine, a vinyl cutter and LEGO robots. In addition, AKKU is the meeting place for language cafés in various languages as well as the Novellikoukku club, which has been popular at other libraries.
AKKU is Espoo’s first self-service library
Opinmäki’s Active Learning Centre acts as Espoo’s first self-service library. You can use the services with your HelMet library card from Monday to Sunday, 7 am to 10 pm.
“AKKU aims to become the beating heart of the growing residential area of Suurpelto,” says Special Librarian Raisa Alameri, who will often be seen in Akku. “Library dog Börje may also pay a visit.”
What is Opinmäki?
Suurpelto’s Opinmäki includes an extensive selection of Espoo’s education and cultural services for city residents of various ages. This building is an open meeting place that is essential for creating a communal spirit in the area. In addition to the library, Opinmäki houses an international school, a Finnish-language comprehensive school, early education premises, a sports hall as well as premises for the adult education centre and Youth Department. All English-language school teaching in Espoo will be centralised in Opinmäki from autumn 2015 onwards.
